From Sofia: Rila Monastery and Boyana Church Day Trip Reviews
Compared to the other 2 trips we did, this was a little disappointing. The guide was good but probably less experienced. Our English version was combined with the Spanish version and the Spanish guide had a lot more to say than ours. That doesn’t necessarily mean he was better or said anything more worthwhile but it left you wondering what you had missed! The Monastery is stunning but we didn’t pay extra to visit the additional bits because we didn’t realise we would only be able to see inside the Church itself and the grounds. We thought we would be able to walk around the upper floors but by the time we realised we couldn’t it was too late. The Boyana Church is small and the most interesting thing about it is the different centuries that have contributed to it. It was less impressive than Rila.
I was happy with the trip, although the English explanation of history was not entirely understandable. I speak both English and Spanish so it allowed me to understand better, but it was not always clear what was meant to be said. It was enough time in the Rila monastery, it could have been more in the restaurant because we had to wait for food and then hurry up eating. The waiter in the restuarant needs serious training, especially in good manners. He wasn’t able to open the wine, he served an 18 years old boy before me – a 44 year old lady. He wanted to charge me for a glass of wine I didn’t have, and didn’t speak Eglish. The restaurant does not have any single vegetarian dish option, not mentioning vegan. I could only have French fries. In Boyana the guy inside the church was also rude to me, and the guide made me first leave, then enter the church agan, as if I was some 15 year old chic. It was not too respectful. The Spanish guide was much nicer.
